New TouchLib filter allows the use of this great camera in multitouch applications!!! New driver allows the camera to run under x86 and 圆4 Windows systems. I created a new single PS3EyeSetup that will autmoatically install all the necessary files.įor more info and up-to-date files go here. Now run the PS3EyeTest.exe program, and the captured video as well as the FPS counter will be displayed. – Click ‘Install’ and follow the setup process.Īfter successful installation, your Device Manager should look similar to this: NOTE: I am currently running Vista and all the code is developed and tested under this particular OS, but it should work on XP with no problems. In parallel I will be working on a DirectShow filter that will allow wide use of this camera on Windows. My driver exposes PS3Eye camera as a device with direct access, thus eliminating the complexities and the overhead of DirectShow system.įor multitouch applications (where low latency is a key) I will be working on custom PS3EYE capture filter for use in TouchLib. Most of the CPU overhead that I currently have is the color conversion code that is implemented in straight C/C++ without any SIMD optimizations.įor real (MT) applications this code will go away, since we will be extracting raw grayscale image (every second byte of YUYV). This is why it is recommended that the camera be the only device connected to the USB host controller. The camera currently streams video in YUYV format, therefore each frame is 640*480*2 bytes.Īt 30fps this amounts to about 17.5MB/s which is pretty low in comparison to the total USB 2.0 bandwidth.Īt 60fps the amount of data gets higher and it could be affected by other peripherals connected to the USB host controller. – Low CPU overhead (since there is no decompression involved on the PC) – Full VGA (640×480) 60fps video capture test app that features uncompressed high quality raw video Initially, I started poking around with the USB trying to send some commands to the PS3Eye and see what happens…Īfter many long nights I’m bringing you the result: If we could just get it to work under Windows…” I started thinking to my self: “This camera is awesome and it will be such a great and inexpensive replacement for Firefly MV and the like. The camera’s chipset info is virtually non-existent on the web.Īfter examining the camera internals ( pictures here) I found that it features the OV534-LB50 camera USB 2.0 bridge and the OV7720 CMOS VGA sensor. Now, the main problem with this camera is that there are no drivers for Windows. The best part is the price $39.99! I found mine here. This makes the PS3Eye ideal for multitouch applications. – Uncompressed video or optional JPEG compression – 2.1 F-stop, <1% distortion, fixed focus (25cm to 8 at 75º FOV) – 4 channel audio input:16 bits/channel, 48kHz, SNR 90db Well boys and girls, I’ve been working hard last few weeks to make this great camera work under Windows.Īs you may seen it before, here are the specs:

One thing to note is that using Suspend overwrites any in-game battery save, like the ones in Zelda or SMB3. You can also lock saves so they can’t be overwritten by simply pressing Down again while in the Suspend menu.Įach game gets its own four slots, which is generally more than enough. The idea is it makes it unlikely you’ll accidentally overwrite another save, but it takes a bit of skill to operate with any speed and confidence. If a save is already there, you hold A for about half a second and it pushes the previous one out of the way with a cute little animation. There are four slots there, and if they’re empty, you press A to drop the save in there. Once you hit Reset, you hit down to go to the Suspend menu. The interface here is a bit obtuse, though it gets more intuitive with time. You do this by hitting the Reset button, which puts you back at the menu and shows a winged screenshot floating there, waiting to be resumed, saved or deleted. Unlike the original NES, of course, this one lets you save your progress in a game at any time. This is very much going after the original experience, complete with flickering, well-known bugs in games and so on. Nintendo also has not attempted to improve on the original by doing frame interpolation, removing the 8-sprite-per-line limit or anything like that. I saw a couple of small graphical glitches in the hours I played, but they were very much the kind you’d see when playing the originals: some graphical corruption that disappears when you walk backwards and forwards again, and the like. It’s nice to be playing on the NES-style controller, too. This time, Nintendo got everything right.Ĭontrols are as responsive as they ever were, with no appreciable lag or other weirdness. I’ve never been a fan of the Virtual Console - I liked the idea, but it never was executed quite right, whether it was the controls, the display style or something else. No cloud saves or accounts here - it’s all on the device itself. You can unplug it, wrap the cords up and take it to a friend’s house super-easily, and pick up a game where you left off. On the plus side, it makes the console very portable. If you’ve got a nice, tucked-away A/V setup, the NES Classic isn’t going to fit into it. Believe me, it’s too short.īetween this and the necessity of pressing the Reset button on the console itself to save the game, it’s clear Nintendo wants the NES to sit near you on the coffee table or whatnot, but that means running a cord across the living room - not ideal. This actually makes it look longer than it is. In Tales of Phantasia, the player sprite vertically stretches upon walking onto a save spot, and in Star Ocean, items are squashed when popping out of an open treasure chest. One exception to Mode 7-like effects on sprites handled neither by pre-drawing nor by external chips occurs in Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean, where re-rendering of sprites on the fly is done entirely by the software. However, this only allows one "sprite" to be manipulated at once. In these examples, the boss is a "background" and therefore rotates through Mode 7, and the scoreboard, which is "above" the field of play, is also a background, but the floor of battle's cracks are, as with the players and gunfire, "sprites" that are redrawn under various rotations as the player rotates. A notable workaround does exist and can be seen in Contra III: The Alien Wars in the second boss battle, and in Super Mario World in the battles against Reznor (platform wall support), Iggy (battle platform), Larry (also the platform), Morton, Ludwig, Roy, and Bowser. Similarly, the appearance of sprite rotations must be handled through pre-drawing unless they are done with hardware included in the game cartridge such as the Super FX 2 chip, as with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. This can be seen in Super Mario Kart and HyperZone whenever an object approaches, or when walking vertically on the Final Fantasy VI map with an airship in view. The fact that Mode 7 cannot be used on sprites means that each "size" of an "approaching" sprite for a given distance has to be pre-drawn, meaning that one would see sprites "jump" between a limited number of sizes when "approaching" them. They can also be turned into sprites if the whole screen is needed, but this can cause slowdown. For instance, a floor, ceiling, or scoreboard can remain part of a background in both the NES and SNES examples as long as they are completely "above" or "below" the field of gameplay. Both systems' examples can only apply to objects in the horizontal plane of the moving object. With the obvious enhancements, this is similar to how some NES games feature battles against a giant movable boss without the slowdown and flicker inherent in a large sprite set-by making the boss the background, and then moving and animating it. For instance, in Super Castlevania IV, battles in which a large boss such as Koranot rotates have the mobile boss implemented as the background, while the blocks on which the protagonist stands are sprites. The game developer must create a sprite with the same appearance as that object. Mode 7 can only work on backgrounds, not sprites therefore, any object that does not rotate or scale with the background must be a sprite, even items that would normally be thought of as part of the background, such as fixed platforms. In this way, pseudo-perspective, curved surface, and distortion effects can be achieved. However, many games create additional effects by setting a different transformation matrix for each scanline. Two-dimensional affine transformations can produce any combination of translation, scaling, reflection, rotation, and shearing-and nothing else. Īll arithmetic is carried out on 16-bit signed fixed point numbers, while all offsets are limited to 13 bits. Mode 7 graphics are generated for each pixel by mapping screen coordinate r. Examples include the second and fifth stage of Contra III: The Alien Wars, the second and fifth stage of Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3-D, the introduction screen of Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose, when a player falls off the stage in Super Mario Kart, some cinematics in Super Metroid, and in some boss battles in Super Mario World. The effect enables developers to create the impression of sprawling worlds that continue toward the horizon.Ī particular utilization technique with Mode 7 allows pixels of the background layer to be in front of sprites. This graphical method is suited to racing games, and is used extensively for the overworld sections of role-playing games such as Square's popular 1994 game Final Fantasy VI. The last one (background mode 7) has a single layer that can be scaled and rotated. The Super NES console has eight graphics modes, numbered from 0 to 7, for displaying background layers. Now, the MAX Mode costs 2 bars of meter instead of 1. The MAX Mode returns with the established mechanics of XIV, but with added tweaks. Shun'ei, about to apply his new climax in Meitenkun. The character design is being handled by Tomohiro Nakata, which also worked on The King of Fighters All Star. The director of King of Fighters XIV, Yasuyuki Oda, will serve as the title's producer. In December 2018, SNK revealed the company was working on The King of Fighters XV, aiming to release it during 2020. Meanwhile, Chizuru Kagura senses something interfering with the seal of Orochi, otherwise known as Gaia's Will. Rumors swirled back then that Usher cheated on Chilli, but Chilli seems to claim otherwise. The pair called it quits in 2003 in a sudden split, per Showbiz Cheat Sheet. If you couldn't tell from their red carpet appearances together and their steamy music videos throughout the years, the chemistry between the couple was through the roof! Sadly, their relationship couldn't withstand the hardships. Many of their fans had super heart eyes for Usher and Chilli's relationship. Usher and Chilli first met in 1993 when Usher first signed his deal at the age of 14, and Chilli was 21 at the time, as Zimbioreported. Those ages sound unsettling at first, but the former R&B duo wouldn't begin dating until 2001, eight years later. Fortunately, we have the "U Remind Me" video to thank for being the reason these two ended up together - however, this was not the first time they met. With the TLC singer hanging on Usher's shoulder, the couple were Hollywood's "it" couple of the early 2000s. Step aside, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears! The former popstar couple and their matching ensembles had nothing on singers Usher and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas' relationship. “These applications share data from some of the largest sequencing studies in the world,” he says. Matthew Solomonson, a software engineer at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts, uses it to build web applications such as the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD), which is used to explore genomic data. Voice coding underlies a wide variety of science - any researcher who writes code could use it. And they say that there are unexpected advantages. It takes at least a month of difficult, sometimes frustrating, training to get set up, but coding by voice helps these programmers to keep doing their jobs or continue their studies. Now, a small but growing community has developed a workaround: coding by voice command. RSI can derail the careers of computational biologists and other scientists who code. The syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve, which travels down the outer edge of the arm, becomes pinched at the elbow, causing numbness, pain and loss of fine motor control in the hands and fingers. Pimentel had cubital tunnel syndrome caused by repetitive strain injury (RSI). Three years later, as a computational-genomics postdoc at Stanford University in California, he does just that. “My adviser jokingly said, ‘Can’t you do this by voice?’” he recalls. As a computational-biology PhD student, his work involved constant typing - and he was born with only one arm. While there is no little pill that can magically transform you into a fluent speaker of another language, this exercise can broaden your professional and personal horizons.Debilitating hand pain is always bad news, but Harold Pimentel’s was especially unwelcome. Practice a couple of times, first reading out loud, then reading a bit less until you’re more or less fluent. First, contact a teacher, schedule a first lesson and then ask if they are OK with you giving presentations through Skype. You can work with language teachers over Skype in virtually any language. Now you should have a decent text in the language of your choice. You want to carve out the rough edges that Google Translate left in your speech. Go to a freelancer platform, such as Upwork (formerly known as Elance-oDesk) or, and search for a copywriter that copyedits and corrects text. If you don’t pay attention you will end up with very funny sentences that will likely amuse your audience for the wrong reasons. Although software is available worldwide, you cannot yet fully trust any translation. The first draft part is actually really important. Google Translate will give you a first draft of your speech in the language of your choice. A good alternative, yet one that still involves spending a little money, is to Dragon it, i.e., purchase some speech recognition software, such as Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking, that turns your speech into a text file. You can do this yourself (it takes a bit of time) or send it to a transcription service (there’s some money involved here). You ideally want to use a lapel microphone so that your hands are free while you are talking. Record your speech in your native language on your smartphone or other device that can give a recognizable file format as output. (Giving a speech in a language that is totally new to you is another matter.) Follow these five steps and take advantage of my favorite tools. I often hear: “I am OK when I present in my native language, but in English/French/Chinese/(add your second language here) … that’s another story.” I will share my process for giving presentations in my non-native languages.įirst, I will make two assumptions: one, that you have a presentation more or less ready and now need to deliver it in another language, and two, that you have some experience in the other language and can speak on a moderate/intermediate level but have not yet reached a fully fluent presentation level. If you’ve ever been asked to give a speech or business presentation in a foreign language, you know the level of insecurity this request can bring. Scott Cawthon himself has had to remove the game from Steam and tell the fans of the original game that this is just an incomplete version. At first glance, the setup reminds of Pokmon. So maybe there's a chance that this debacle, whenever it ends, will conclude with Electronic Arts allowing players to enjoy the game without having to connect online. By the next year, it had dropped the always-online schemes, and Assassin's Creed III only required a single activation. What happened there? In fact, the bad PR and outcry from fans over an anti-piracy scheme that seemed to hurt legitimate players far more than it did pirates caused Ubisoft to reconsider. If your internet connection dropped during play for some reason, you'd immediately lose all your progress since the last save point. Another recent game that did was Ubisoft's PC version of Assassin's Creed II, released in 2010. Of course, Diablo didn't also have the issue of erasing players' progress. The lesson there was: If you screw up and don't properly plan for the launch of your service, so what? If the game's good enough, players will stop complaining the second they get in. Half-Life 2 was celebrated as the game of the year. It reported that fake programs promising to unlock your copy of Half-Life but that actually contained a virus were spreading around to impatient players.Īnd now? The once-reviled Steam service, required to play Half-Life and looked upon as useless bloatware in 2004, is now a beloved addition to any gamer's desktop. "Message boards on Half-Life 2 fan sites were buzzing with talk about the delays and the frustration people felt about being kept from playing," the BBC News reported at the time. But gamers, used to instant gratification, were up in arms when this process resulted in some slight delays. Remember the great wailing and rending of garments over the launch of Half-Life 2 in 2004? That game simply required you to pop on Valve's server for a split-second to do a one-time confirmation that you had a genuine game, and then you could get to playing. This is hardly the first DRM-related controversy that's come up as a new game was released. And Amazon removed both the downloadable and physical versions of the game from its store, with a note that reads, in part, "at this time we do not know when the issue will be fixed."īut once this is all solved, she said, it'll be like nothing happened. There had certainly been short-term ones: On Metacritic, the game currently has over 1800 user reviews that average out to a 1.7 out of 10. There won't be any long-term repercussions, my now long-suffering fiancee said as we drove to work Thursday morning, as the blackout stretched into its third day. She did not give a timeframe for the resolution. In response to Wired's request for comment, an EA spokesperson referred us to a blog post by SimCity senior producer Kip Katsarelis, who wrote that Electronic Arts would be adding new servers until the player base could be fully accommodated, and that it would prioritize stabilizing this situation before it turned the game's features back on. What's next? Will EA determine that the skyscrapers are just too tall? By the end of the day EA had ripped out the "Cheetah" gameplay mode, which speeds up the passage of time so you can develop your city more quickly. At first it was non-core features like achievements and high score leaderboards. Electronic Arts' attempts to fix the problem have not only been unsuccessful, they've been making the SimCity blackout even worse, at least from a public relations standpoint: EA said Thursday that it would actually begin removing features from the game in an attempt to get it to run. In other words, SimCity is currently in the midst of a disaster that makes zombie attacks and nuclear meltdowns seem tame. |
